Stars: solidarity (community engagement)
The Kiwanis Club of Grand Cayman would like to utilize our unique mobile library full of children's books on Saturday 1st June to undertake a reading event with children at the George Town Primary School. Our book mobile is at the very heart of our club and improving literacy whilst sharing the joy of books with young children, from reading with them to providing books they can have of their very own, we think, would be a valued project for 60 Acts of Service.
The Book Mobile is permanently situated at George Town Primary School and volunteers assist each Thursday to read with the children at the school but as part of the 60 Acts of Service running it on the weekend we can encourage as many children (from all schools) and adults to join together and read with us at our library. The library is located next to the administration building and requires minimal set up for the event except chairs. We intend to run the project for two hours 10am – 12pm on Saturday 1st June. Participants will pair up to select books to sit and read together outside in a shady spot. The school would promote the event internally and we would reach out to other schools to encourage children to participate. We would also encourage children to take any books with them to enjoy at home.
