SEA SUNDAY 2021 | WEEKEND OF SUNDAY, 11 JULY

Every year churches around the world celebrate Sea Sunday. It is a day for people to come together to pray for seafarers and fishers and thank them for the vital role they play in all of our lives. On this day, churches and individuals honour the unique and often overlooked contribution seafarers make to society. Seafarers make an invaluable contribution to international trade and the world economy, often at great personal sacrifice to themselves and their families. Sea Sunday provides an opportunity to specifically pray for the world’s 1.5 million seafarers still at sea as well as the millions of former seafarers including those here at home in the Cayman Islands.

Your church can show your support for seafarers and fishers this Sea Sunday by including the below message, prayer, and announcements. While Sea Sunday this year is on 11 July, you can also choose to celebrate seafarers and fishers any day of the year that suits you. Our hope is that you would share the below announcement leading up to Sea Sunday and set aside a few moments in your church service on Sunday, 11 July (or SDA services on Saturday, 10 July) to pray for seafarers and their families.

special prayers FOR SEA SUNDAY

Sea Sunday is the annual day which many churches around the world set aside to remember and pray for seafarers and their families and give thanks for their lives and work. On this day, churches and individuals honour the unique and often overlooked contribution seafarers make to society. Seafarers make an invaluable contribution to international trade and the world economy, often at great personal sacrifice to themselves and their families. Sea Sunday provides an opportunity to specifically pray for the world’s 1.5 million seafarers still at sea as well as the millions of former seafarers.

On this special day, particularly in the year of Celebrating Our Seafaring Heritage in the Cayman Islands, let us take a few moments to bow our heads to pray for our seafarers, past and present, and their families.

A Prayer for Seafarers

Heavenly Father, we pray for all who sacrifice their home and family life, to work as seafarers. We think of the many months at sea, enduring the hardships and dangers of heavy seas, storms and strong winds far away from home. Look with favour on all seafarers who miss their families and loved ones, comfort those who feel isolated or lonely, scared or insecure. Bring them safely home to shore, and at the end of their contract, return them into the loving arms of their families and friends. We ask this in the name of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

A Prayer for the Families of Seafarers

God of all goodness, look with kindness and compassion on all those who wait for the safe return of their loved ones who work upon the seas. Draw near to them in times of worry, restore them in times of sickness, and strengthen them when they are weary. Help them to trust in your unfailing mercy and to know at all times your sustaining love. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

Let us pray together as Jesus has taught us

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
